The context

Sustainability is woven into the fabric of life at CIS, a bilingual school where students don't wait for permission to lead. When students set out to organise Fashion Forward: Redefining the Runway — a summit examining the future of fashion through a sustainability lens — they wanted more than talks and a runway show. They wanted their peers to genuinely understand why the clothes we wear carry such a heavy environmental footprint, and what can be done about it.

What we did

A customised interactive workshop was designed to take students behind the scenes of the clothes they wear every day. The session began by unpacking the difference between a linear economy — the "take, make, dispose" model behind most fast fashion — and a circular economy that keeps materials in use for as long as possible. From there, participants traced the real journey of a garment, following cotton as it becomes yarn, yarn as it becomes fabric, and fabric as it becomes the clothes on their backs, surfacing the environmental impact at each step along the way.

Rather than ending on the scale of the problem, the workshop turned the question back to the students: what could they actually do to reduce their own impact? Working through their own habits and choices, participants ideated practical ways to shift from a throwaway mindset towards more circular behaviours — making the issue personal, actionable, and directly relevant to their lives.

The outcome

The workshop gave students a systems-level understanding of the fashion industry to carry into the rest of the summit and beyond — not just an awareness of fast fashion's cost, but a working grasp of circularity as an alternative and a sense of their own agency within it. By grounding a complex global issue in the everyday choices students make, the session equipped them to think critically about consumption long after the runway lights went down.
